Winning feels great — and it is important that you have big goals. But being a champion is about more than being in the spotlight. It’s about character, consistency, and the habits you build year after year.
Beyond the Spotlight
You have probably seen kids win first place and still walk out of the show ring with bad attitudes. That’s not the champion anyone should want to be. I’ve also seen kids place lower but beam with excitement at where they were. You might think it is because they haven’t shown as much, but it is just as often simple thankfulness. Showmen can win one day and still be thankful they made it into the top ten the next. Winning doesn’t make the next win any more expected or guaranteed. Showmen who have this humble approach have my respect. There are showmen with a real love of the show ring and they earn respect from many in the barn because of how they handle themselves.

What the True Champions Share
This is the same in every animal show ring. Whether you’re showing a sheep, a market goat, a dairy goat, a steer, or a pig, the same truth applies: a ribbon fades, but your reputation as a showman stays. People remember you years later when they look back at their show career or when they see you in the barn again. They were secretly rooting for someone they respected and were hoping someone else they didn’t wouldn’t win.
Work to be a champion in the ring, yes — but more importantly, work to be a champion outside it. That’s the kind of success that lasts. You will have tons of memories to look back on and you want to be able to smile at them all!
